What is Peri to Post Menopause?
The time leading up to menopause, called peri-menopause can start at anytime between the ages of 39 and 51 (average age in Canada is 45.1 years), and can last between two and eight years (the average being 5). Peri-menopause is signaled by the onset of symptoms associated with menopause, which can include irregular periods, hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, vaginal dryness, headaches, incontinence, and muscle and joint aches, though women’s experiences of menopause vary considerably and some women experience little more than the cessation of menses.
Menopause refers to the end of menstruation and is said to have occurred when a woman has not had a period for 12 months. At that point women are considered ‘postmenopausal’. In Canada, the average age of natural menopause is 51, but menopause can occur prematurely due to surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.
Why is exercise important during this life phase?
Due to the hormonal changes, Peri to Post Menopausal women are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, incontinence and weight gain.
Physical activity will help to protect women from these health conditions, or prevent them from developing into significant health risks. It can also ease the transition through this phase of life by alleviating menopausal symptoms, enhancing mental health and improving cognitive function.
